Recruiting FAQs

How do I reach a live person at Inside Higher Ed? Simple. Call 202-659-9208, extension 107 to speak to Samantha Smith, our recruitment advertising assistant. You can also e-mail Sam at samantha.smith@insidehighered.com or direct your e-mail to recruit@insidehighered.com. We do our best to reply to e-mails the day we receive them.

Who reads Inside Higher Ed? Nearly 600,000 higher ed professionals from every academic discipline and every administrative area (site traffic measured by Google Analytics). About 40% of our readers are academics, about 35% are line administrators, and nearly 20% are executives. Readership is proportional throughout the country, and about 12% of our readers are outside the U.S. Our readers come from every kind of institution; about 15% are at community colleges. And our readers are very diverse: nearly 20% are minorities and more than 50% are women. Request a summary of our latest reader survey by writing to recruit@insidehighered.com

How does my ad reach these readers? Like any job board, Inside Higher Ed posts your job announcement to our jobs database. But unlike any other job board we make it work a lot harder to reach your best candidates. First, when searching our database, candidates return not just a job title and institution name, but the introduction to your ad text. Second, we display appropriately related jobs with our editorial content. This means that someone reading a story about an innovative new idea in admissions will be presented with admissions jobs (a significant portion of the traffic to our job postings comes via these links – meaning we’re delivering the passive candidates you most want to reach). Finally, for an additional fee we offer a featured link in our daily news e-mail to really boost attention.

How Does Inside Higher Ed help me reach a diverse candidate pool? A lot of recruiting sites offer services that purport to help you reach diverse candidates. Unfortunately, these services are generally well-named, but woefully ineffective. At Inside Higher Ed, we take a different approach – by publishing an inclusive, compelling professional journal and offering it free online, we have gathered the most diverse readership of any higher education publication. Our unique advantages for diversity recruiting include: Free content - Higher education is most diverse among budget conscious younger academics and institutions such as community colleges. Our free content model means everyone in higher education is part of our audience. Inclusive coverage - When diverse readers and people at diverse institutions come to our site, they find themselves and their institutions and issues covered. Help for academic couples - Our Dual Career search quickly identifies jobs for both partners and spotlights them by location. In seconds, academic couples can find proximate jobs – and that can be the key to your institution landing a great diversity hire. Reach to passive candidates – Inside Higher Ed lets you broaden your search to include the qualified diversity candidates who aren’t on the job market, but might be intrigued by an exciting new opportunity. From featured jobs in our daily news e-mail to jobs displayed with appropriate editorial content to display advertising throughout the Web site, Inside Higher Ed connects you with great diversity candidates whether they search our jobs database or not.

Any advice on effective recruiting? This is Inside Higher Ed – we have advice about everything! Click here to check out our Smart Recruiting Tips and learn how to write effective online job ads; how to reach passive candidates; how to recruit for hard to fill positions; or how to make your own Web site work well for recruiting new faculty and staff.

How do I post a job on Inside Higher Ed?Just click and fill out the job posting form. If you have an account with us, you’ll be asked to log in as you submit your ad. If you don’t already have an account, you’ll create one as part of the posting process. Need help? Contact Sam Smith at 202-659-9208, x 107 with questions.

How do I pay for a job posting on Inside Higher Ed? You can pay by credit card at the time you post or we can invoice you. One restriction – we will not invoice new accounts that are not from accredited institutions of higher ed. So if you’re posting for the first time for a company or nonprofit, you’ll need to pre-pay with a credit card.

How do I make changes to a job posting? Once you’ve posted a job, you’ll have an Inside Higher Ed recruiter account (we use your e-mail address as your username and a password of your choosing). Click and log in to get to your dashboard – you’ll see a link to “manage posts.” From this screen you can edit or delete job posts.

What is a Premium Posting? A premium Posting is a job posting with extra oomph. For an additional $150, we position your posting at the top of search results pages, highlighted in color. We also include a link to your posting in one day’s edition of our daily news update e-mail – read by more than 75,000 subscribers each morning.

What is display advertising? Display advertising is the best way to reach passive candidates reading Inside Higher Ed. For an $800 fee added to any job posting, we’ll create a banner ad to run on the Inside Higher Ed editorial pages, linked to a fully designed stand-alone Web page for your job announcement. When users click either the banner ad, or the link to your posting in search results or job alert e-mails, they’re directed to this stand-alone Web page rather than a standard listing. We’ll even include a link to your job in one day’s edition of our popular daily news update e-mail – currently reaching more than 75,000 subscribers. Display ads on Inside Higher Ed are the single most effective way to reach a wide audience of higher ed professionals – whether they’re on the job market or not.

Do you offer job posting packages? We sure do. In addition to a 10-posting package, we offer unlimited postings for 3, 6 or 12 months at real savings. Your cost will depend on the size of your school, with basic posting packages running from $1,500 per year to $5,500 per year. You can also bundle other recruiting products with job postings for even greater impact and cost savings. And we offer group sales on packages as well. Give your account manager a call for more information (see below for account manager territories).

Can I automate my job postings? Inside Higher Ed recognizes that smart recruiting can involve a lot of data entry — posting jobs on Web site after Web site is time consuming and inefficient. Now Inside Higher Ed offers a solution — a direct feed from your jobs database to ours that eliminates the need for a single keystroke to post jobs. Automated job postings require a bit of technical work on your end to get things started, but once in place there’s no work at all involved in posting jobs. Inside Higher Ed has built a SOAP-compliant API that can interact directly with your jobs database (I know, pretty geeky, but the folks who can help you make this happen will know just what it means). With a bit of assistance from your IT department, it’s a simple matter to set up a daily feed of all your job postings, or to allow users to tag individual jobs posted to your Web site for automatic cross-posting to Inside Higher Ed. Inside Higher Ed is running successful API integrations via the following applicant tracking systems: PeopleAdmin, Hodes IQ, Arbita, First Vantage HMS. We also work with JobTarget to automate postings for institutions that don’t have the capability to create an API feed on their own. For a fee, JobTarget will “spider” the job information directly off your live site and feed it to the Inside Higher Ed API – this is truly a no-effort way to automate your postings. Please get in touch with Kathlene Collins, Publisher of Inside Higher Ed, at 202-659-9208, x 103 or kathlene.collins@insidehighered.com for a copy of the API specification or to learn more.

Does Inside Higher Ed provide statistical reporting on my ads? Absolutely. For individual job postings you’ll receive an e-mail as your job is about to expire with a report on the number of views it received. For those posting multiple jobs, we send a monthly traffic summary. Inside Higher Ed also reports on the number of users who not only viewed your ad, but clicked the link for applications.

How does your credential bank work? Registered recruiters at Inside Higher Ed can search our resume bank at no charge. Simply log in at insidehighered.com/recruit and click the link on your dashboard for “browse resumes.”

What is a Featured Employer Profile? A Featured Employer Profile is your own recruitment page within the Inside Higher Ed site. Using our simple template you can put key information and multiple links to your own Web site — organized for the specific needs of job candidates — on a single page that’s linked to all your job postings. Your logo and a link to your profile will be included in our Featured Employer directory, and we highlight featured employers throughout the jobs portion of the Web site for added exposure. Featured Employer Profiles are priced at $1,000 per year. That’s less than $20 a week for a recruitment site that works for you 365 days a year. Give your account manager a call for more information (see below for account manager territories).
